The Only thing that is “Cool” is a Corpse
One of more remarkable expressions that is enjoying currency - especially, and not only, among our young people - these days is the word “Cool”. It is an awful, and very direct reflection, of where we see ourselves. It is an expression that continually crops up in the workshops that go to make up The Harlequin Expereince. Ask someone “How are you doing” or “How are you feeling” and, too often, the answer is “Cool!” Well, as the title says, for me, the only thing that is cool is a corpse.
There is nothing wrong with the word cool. The problem lies in the fact that we create large chunks of our reality with the words that we use. So then the next question is, if you are “Cool”, then how alive are you? Are you really engaging with life - and that word means “going glove to glove”- or are you drifting through, avoiding real commitment, real conversation, real experience? How alive is your relationship? Or is that “cool” as well? Are you doing your best not to make too many waves as you drift through the days, looking for the “action” outside in sport, TV and other forms of so-called entertainment, that are designed to keep us distracted from the real, WARM stuff. There is a whole entertainment industry out there that is very specifically aimed at keeping us distracted from dealing with the real issues of life, so that we can be “cool”.
Try it and see what happens. Next time someone asks “How are you?”, or something similar, try the answer “WARM!” or even “HOT!”
